The Story of Kopi O Kaw
Let us tell you a story about Hainanese coffee and Nanyang. The latter refers to the regions of South East Asia, primarily Malaysia and Singapore as well as the Chinese diaspora that migrated from China in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Let us also tell you a story about the humble coffee and how it became the preferred drink for many Malaysians and Singaporeans.
The word 'kopitiam' is a portmanteau of two words – 'kopi' means coffee in the Malay language and 'tiam' means shop in the Chinese Hokkien dialect, it literally means coffee shop. You may find the typical white marble tables for the patrons and local coffee being served in green floral porcelain cups in these friendly neighbourhood coffee shops.
The Diamine Kopi O Kaw ink is created to honour the institution of the kopitiams and perhaps its most popular brew, the Kopi O Kaw. Kopi O Kaw, in its original form, is an extra strong brew of kopi or Hainanese coffee, served without milk. The Diamine Kopi O Kaw ink showcases a brown tone with green highlights – the brown symbolizing the dark brew, and the green reflecting the raw beans from which the coffee beans are derived. Bring the ink up to the nose and you will be able to savour the heady scent of freshly brewed kopi that will allow your mind to travel, instantly to the shores of Nanyang.
The drinkable version of kopi (like its western counterpart, coffee), can be enjoyed in various forms – Kopi O Kosong (black, no sugar), Kopi Peng (iced) or just good old Kopi (condensed milk and sugar). But if there is no kopitiam near you, then the addictive and scent from the Diamine Kopi O Kaw ink may just be a worthy substitute!
