The saying originates from the old painting of the Zen riddle, which depicts a man trying to catch a Catfish by using a Gourd. The gourd is a symbol of good fortune and has been used widely as a charm and an amulet of good luck. In Japan the catfish is a likable character and is commonly believe that catfish can predict earthquakes.
